The Curriculum
A Summary of the School’s Curriculum Aims
Our main aim is to provide a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum for all learners in our school in line with the Curriculum for Wales 2022 vision.
• From September 2022 Ysgol Gyfun Gŵyr will statutorily introduce the Curriculum for Wales 2022 for Year 7 learners with a view to expanding this provision, year on year, to years 8 – 11 by the year 2026/27
• We will ensure continuity along the learning continuum based on development through the Progression Steps of each Area of Learning. We seek to motivate each individual to reach their full potential by providing regular opportunities for self-evaluation, reflection and wider evaluation in order to make further progress
• Ysgol Gyfun Gŵyr has a firm and unwavering vision to ensure exciting, rich and challenging knowledge, skills and experiences for our learners, based on the best teaching, learning and assessment throughout their educational journey within our institution
• Our aim is to provide a curriculum based on teaching and learning of excellence to realise the 4 Purposes in our learners and develop them into:
• ambitious and hardworking learners
• creative and enterprising individuals
• principled and informed citizens
• healthy and confident young people
We believe that by investing in and developing these purposes we can contribute to the creation of a complete young person who can integrate and develop into a mature and productive member of their local society and country
• Developing our learners' awareness of and pride in their Habitat and the Story of Wales is core to our provision and key to broadening our learners' horizons in their appreciation of global traditions, cultures and languages
• Our curriculum is divided into 6 Areas of Learning and Experience (MDaPh), namely:
• Languages, Literacy and Communication (to include Welsh,
English, French and Spanish)
• Humanities (to include History, Geography and Religious
Education)
• Science and Technology (to include Science, Computer
Science and Design and Technology)
• Expressive Arts (to include Music, Drama and Art)
• Mathematics and Numeracy
• Health and Wellbeing
•
Our Curriculum will also give priority to other statutory elements including:
• Relationships and Sex Education
• Human Rights and Children's Rights
• Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
• Career and Work Experience
• Understanding the Importance of our Habitat
We aim to promote our learners' ability to work independently as well as to collaborate in a team, whether that be in pairs or groups
We will promote positive attitudes in each individual so that they can adapt flexibly to new ideas and situations based on the principle of respect, comprising self-esteem, respect for adults, respect for peers and respect for community and for the wider world.
• Attention will be given across the Areas of Learning to develop the Cross-Curricular Skills, which are:
• Literacy
• Numeracy •
• Digital Competence
• An integral part of Curriculum for Wales is to give due attention to the development of the Holistic Skills in our learner, namely:
• Creativity
• Problem Solving
• Critical thinking
• Metacognition
•
