 HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE AND CHILDCARE
Why study Health and Social Care
This subject provides a coherent, satisfying and worthwhile course of study. It provides a suitable foundation for the study of health and social care and childcare through a range of higher education courses, or into employment. You will gain a thorough understanding of how service provision in Wales supports the development and well-being of individuals, to be able to make informed decisions now and in later life. The specifications include contemporary issues in relation to the provision of an ethical and sustainable health and social care and childcare system in Wales, and will enable you to make informed decisions about further learning opportunities or continuing into related career choices. By studying Health and Social Care and Childcare, you will be able to demonstrate that you:
• understand the ethical, social and political issues affecting the health and social care and childcare sectors
• have an awareness of the principles and values which underpin health and social care and childcare
• understand the child-centred or person-centred approaches to care
• can interpret and evaluate theories in health and social care and childcare, and reflect on how they affect the provision of
services
• can identify the sociological, psychological and biological factors that contribute to good health, and explain the role of
government and professionals in promoting and maintaining good health
• can use literacy, numeracy, research and digital competency skills as appropriate within your studies.
There is an opportunity to study two different courses as noted below. Learners may study one, or the other or both together.
  Advanced GCE and Avanced Subsidiary GCE in Health and Social Care, and childcare
 Units
Assessment
1: Promoting health and well-being
50% AS 20% A level
2 hour written exam: 80marks.
There will be a written exam in the summer when you are in year 12.
2: Supporting health, well-being and resiliance in Wales
50% AS 20% A level
Non-examination assessment: 30 hours 100 marks. You will need to complete a non- examination assessment (NEA) task on how the health, well-being and resilience of individuals in Wales are supported through outcome-focused care.
5: Theoretical percepives of adult behaviour
30% A level
2 hour 30 minutes written exam: 100 marks. There will be a written examination in the summer when you are in year 13.The examination is in two sections, Seaction A will relate to pre-release material.
Unit 6: Supporting adults to maintain health, well-being and resilience people.
30% A level
Non-examination assessment: 40 hours
100 marks. You will need to complete a non- examination assessment (NEA) task in which you will produce an information resource for someone planning a future career in the adult health and social care sector.
    Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Health and Social Care: Principles and Contexts
 Units
Assessment
Unit 1: Principles of care and safe practice within outcome focused person centred care.
120 guided learning hours.
Non- examination assessment. 100 marks
You will need to complete two Non Examination Assessment (NEA) tasks under controlled conditions. This will include writing a report and producing an information pack. This will be marked by your teacher and moderated by WJEC.
Unit 2 : Factors affecting growth and development across the lifespan and how this impacts on outcomes, care and support needs. 120 guided learning hours.
External assessment. 100 marks
There will be a written examination in January and May/June every year. You can have two opportunities to sit this assessment if required and the best mark will stand.
Unit 3 : Promoting the rights of individuals across the lifespan.
120 guided learning hours.
Non- examination assessment. 80marks.
You will need to complete Non Examination Assessment (NEA) tasks under controlled conditions. This maybe based on a group of individuals of your choice and enable you to produce evidence as either a podcast, a presentation or a video. This will be marked by your teacher and moderated by WJEC.
5 : Supporting individuals at risk to achieve their desired outcomes.
180 guided learning hours.
