 Notable Achievements
Success
The school’s GCSE and ‘A’ level results have been consistently amongst the best in Wales. Many Sixth form students gain places on various courses in Russell Group Universities including Oxford and Cambridge Universities.
NACE
Ysgol Gyfun Gŵyr is one of 31 schools in Wales, to achieve the prestigious NACE Cymru Challenge Award for More Able and Talented Pupils. The Challenge Award is given for high quality work by the whole school, teachers and governors, in challenging all pupils, including those with high abilities, to achieve their best.
Investors in People
The school received Investor in People status in recognition of the value the school places on people within the institution. There is a clear commitment to the training and professional development of the staff.
Dyslexia Friendly School Status
The school was awarded the Dyslexia Friendly School Status for work done to support dyslexic pupils in the classroom. In the latest Estyn report, reference is made specifically to the excellent progress of pupils with dyslexia at the school.
Sporting Achievements
The school has received the SportsMarc Wales in recognition of opportunities provided in games, physical education and leisure. Teams and Individuals win national honours in a number of disciplines including rugby, cricket, football, hockey, athletics, cycling, horsemanship, swimming, karate, boxing, surfing, life saving and sailing.
Public Speaking
Winners of numerous public speaking competitions with the Rotary and the Urdd.
Rights Respecting School Award
Ysgol Gyfun Gŵyr will be working towards Level 1 of the Rights Respecting School Award promoted by the City and County of Swansea in conjunction with UNICEF. The award recognises the commitment of schools towards the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). The Rights Respecting School Award ensures that we are committed to placing the values and principles of the CRC at the heart of all policies and practice. As a school, we will be educating our pupils on the CRC through a number of curriculum activities and projects throughout the year.
Healthy School
The aim of the Healthy Schools Scheme is to promote and protect the physical, emotional and social health and well- being of children and young people. The school has completed phase 5 of the scheme and is working towards the Healthy School National Quality Award which demonstrates a whole school approach toall areas of health.
WRU's School of Rugby award
In 2014, the school was awarded the WRU School of Rugby Award. This national award was given in recognition of the commitment within the school and the surrounding area to promote rugby.
Sixth Form Engineering Team
For over ten years, our school engineering team has been successful in winning awards in the Engineering Education SchemeWales competition. By working closely and receiving support from our industry partner, Schaeffler (UK) Ltd, Calsonic Kansei Europe and Eddyfi Technologies UK Ltd students have managed to experience a wealth of opportunities and develop their knowledge and understandingof engineering.
